Last time, we talked about Offshore Trolling. For those of you who prefer not to venture offshore, out of sight of land, there is an alternative, Near Shore Trolling. Near Shore Trolling occurs from a few hundred yards of the beach to a few miles from shore, still well within sight of land, for those of you who are squeamish. This can be a great tool in your fishing arsenal, especially when you are having trouble finding fish using the traditional bottom fishing methods. Many great sportfish and highly edible species will grab a trolled bait or lure, and in some areas, certain times of the year the larger sportfish will venture close to shore, so you never know what you might catch. These include Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, Grouper, and even Wahoo have been known to venture into near shore waters during the hot summer months. The best trolling method is to use a combination of offshore and inshore baits and lures. Using your outriggers and downrigger along with your flat lines, you can easily put a spread of 6 or 7 lines in the water. I usually place a skirted Ballyhoo on the downrigger, another skirted Ballyhoo on one outrigger, a Spanish sardine on the other outrigger, and a combination of spoons and lures on the remaining lines. The spoons are normally the best method to catch Spanish Mackerel, however, one my last Near Shore Trolling trip in around 50 feet of water, 3 miles offshore, I hooked a large Spanish Mackerel on one of my outriggers rigged with a large skirted Ballyhoo. When I am Near Shore Trolling, I will alternate my trolling speed between a 5 mph troll down to a 3 mph troll, and sometimes I may increase to a higher speed troll for short distances until I find the trolling speed that gives me the best results. Once you find the fish, you can stop trolling, chum the water to keep the fish near, then use traditional fishing methods such as bottom fishing rigs, surface rigs and lures/spoons to catch more fish. Remember to bring a landing net for smaller fish and a gaff just in case you catch the unexpected large Kingfish or Wahoo. Hope you have fun on your next near shore fishing trip.
